Modular Units for Garage Storage
One of the biggest recent advances in garage storage has been in modular units. These units run from the cheap and flimsy to stuff nice enough put anywhere inside your home. They come in all shapes and colors imaginable. With a bit of planning you can add drawers, cabinets and work space that will dramatically increase your available storage.
A really nice site is Garage Cabinets Online. They have some good pictures and the prices are in line with what everyone else charges.
For more excellent examples of what’s available you can visit Slide-Lok. They make some nice modular pieces that are of sufficient quality to put some of the “good” stuff for long term storage.
One area that is often overlooked when purchasing modular storage units is around the ceiling and the space above the garage door when it is open. This is a great place to stash that extension latter you only use once or twice a decade. A good rule of thumb: The least often used items should go the highest on the wall and the most often used should stay as close to waist height as possible. No need to throw out your back every time you need a hammer or vise grips.
Before you get started you may want to diagram your garage and determine what is the most important for your personal needs. Are you looking for a work bench? Do you need a bunch of small drawers or would a storage cabinet serve you better?
Also, check your measurements before you order any modular units. They can be a pain – and expensive -- to return if they don’t fit.
